BAND BIO
futureBLU, a music project founded in Chicago, has been generating
some real heat in the music industry. Now based in the City
of Angels, the guy behind this solo project goes only by the
pseudonym Jim. Dressed in metal and black, the brief, somewhat
perplexing interview started off with his statement that, "flash
and focus should be aimed at the music, not at me." He
stated that his first full length demo - painstainedFACE - is
an evolving encyclopedia of his own milestones and concerns.
"Each album will become more and more exoteric. Much like
a flashlight, illuminating only a small patch on the sand, that
slowly rises higher and further away. Slowly, new surroundings
are revealed and a whole new perspective is unveiled. Each album
represents the strengthening of this energy; the rising of the
light." When asked about the meaning of the project's
name, Jim explained "the future is inevitable, but the
condition of the future has yet to be realized. Not a color
just in the physical sense, but the invisible halo surrounding
it." I am not exactly sure what he meant by "it."
Jim also mentioned that the album has mathematical relevance,
as well as other hidden lyrical tricks. “Two ways to
dream on animal impurity” - a line from the song “anger
within the RING” - doesn’t make a lot of sense.
But when one speaks the line it becomes, “to waste a
dream on animal impurity,” which Jim explained talks
about someone ruining their dream… in this song, “the
ring,” because they can’t control their animal
instincts. Jim spends days developing these algorithms so
he can include an even deeper layer in his music for the true
fans to really get into. “Every note is a pixel of the
picture,” he added. “Music…this noise is
how I paint what I see, feel, and breathe.”
From more than one local source, I had heard rumors alleging
that due to some childhood experiment, Jim was given mechanical
organs or veins, but when I brought it up, he quickly averted.
When asked about where on the genre scale he thought futureBLU
would fall, he became irritated and said that his first album
[painstainedFACE] is aggressive, powerful, and unique. He
refused to label the project, and then went on to say that
his next album would be very different. Throughout the interview,
Jim demonstrated a kind of unchecked poise that was at once
both oddly compelling and slightly uneasy, as he seemed not
to care what I wrote or thought. (Very different from many
other budding rock and rollers)
Remarkably though, the album is truly outstanding, despite
it’s “demo” status. For all of his rough
edges, Jim has the creative license to do what he wants, and
the confidence to explore many uncharted areas. I can't say
I understand him, but there is no denying both his talent
and vision. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted!
